What is it?

Takoyaki are round balls of wheat batter cooked in a dimpled cast-iron pan, each hiding a piece of boiled octopus with tempura scraps, pickled ginger and spring onion. They were popularised in Osaka in 1935, credited to street vendor Tomekichi Endo.

Osaka's Dotonbori stalls still turn them with metal picks in front of crowds, even on humid 27°C summer nights. A boat of six is the standard street portion, finished with sweet-savoury sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, green laver and dancing bonito flakes.

The shell is lightly crisp, the centre molten and custardy, and the octopus gives a springy chew. Let them cool before biting.

How we tested

Reference by Y.W. Fung at 82kg with an Apple Watch Ultra. The reference route is a 5.3-mile loop at 3.1 mph walking and 6 mph running; food burn minutes are calculated from calories at those rates, not individually walked off for every food. The reference test date is 2026-05-20. Check the food's listed source and serving.

In Seoul and Tokyo, where summers are usually around 27°C and humid, a longer walk in the heat can feel harder than the reference loop shown here.

Real-World Test

Tested with takoyaki from Don Don Donki in Tsim Sha Tsui, around 30°C and humid. Hot inside with creamy mayo on top. I ate slowly, and it was more filling than I expected for the calories.
