2026-05-29, 82kg, Apple Watch Ultra HR 174 avg. My reference for running 8mph is 1080 kcal per hour. 28°C and damp, 6:30am on the Tsuen Wan waterfront. I couldn't talk. 7:30 per mile pace.
MET 12.5 is the approximate equivalent of my 82kg rate, not a separate measurement. My 82kg reference is 1080 kcal/hour. At 70kg, that's about 922. At 98kg, about 1291. The formula (minutes × MET × 3.5 × kg) / 200 is reference only. USDA FoodData is used for food cost, not exercise burn.
What could 30 min cover? About 540 kcal, close to Malatang Bowl (520 kcal). I'd treat that as a comparison, not a reason to earn a meal.
Running at 8 mph means covering a mile in about seven and a half minutes. It is a demanding sustained pace, better suited to runners already comfortable with faster sessions than to a first run. An athletics track or a clear, level path makes pacing easier to judge without weaving around traffic or pedestrians.
In damp summer air, the effort can rise quickly: breathing is hard, talking is difficult, and the legs may feel heavy well before the distance is done. A headwind or uneven surface can make the same displayed speed feel tougher. Warm up first and ease off rather than chasing a fixed pace at all costs.

Questions I get
How much does running 8mph burn in 30 minutes?
At my 82kg reference, 540 kcal. I'd adjust for your weight and effort above.
Would I burn the same amount at 70kg?
Probably not. The weight-scaled estimate is 922 kcal per hour, not a personal measurement.
Is the MET figure my actual Watch result?
No. MET 12.5 is an approximate equivalent of the 82kg rate, not another Watch measurement. I use 1080 kcal/hour as the starting point.
